Scott County Emergency Food Pantry

We want to tell you about some great people who do a wonderful job of helping people in their community. But first, here is a little information about the community that benefits from their good works.  The rural community of Helenwood is nestled in the beautiful mountains of Scott County.  Scott County is home to the Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area and well known for its elk population.  Also home to Scott County is the Scott County Emergency Food Pantry, otherwise known as SCEFP.  In a community of approximately 21,000, 18% of people are out of work.  SCEFP provides both food and job awareness to the people of Scott County.  During the month of February volunteers provided food bags to some 550 clients.  This number has more than doubled over the past months.  During 2008, SCEFP was serving approximately 230 clients per month.

Charlie May, a retired marketing director for a well known hotel chain; Connie McKinley, a retired nurse; Charles Lance, a retired railroad employee; and Sister Pat, a sister at a local catholic church, have been working side by side in the food pantry for over 14 years.  These four individuals, dedicated and hard working will always greet you with a smile and a kind word.

In addition to food and job awareness, Charlie May and his group of outstanding SCEFP volunteers assist with a local Ensure Program.  The Ensure Program provides Ensure shakes to cancer patients to help maintain their immune systems.

Second Harvest Food Bank and the community of Scott County would like to say thank you to SCEFP for all the work they do for their community and their continued selfless dedication to helping others.  It is our pleasure to partner with such a fine organization.
